About the organization

Indigenous Peoples Rights International (IPRI) is a legally registered, non-profit global Indigenous Peoples organization that works to protect Indigenous Peoples rights and unite and amplify the call for justice to victims of criminalization and impunity.

It was born out of growing criminalization and attacks against Indigenous Peoples. It was established to lead and coordinate The Global Initiative to Address and Prevent Criminalization, Violence, and Impunity against Indigenous Peoples, a concerted effort to address the global challenge of Indigenous Peoples confronted with criminalization, impunity, and violence for defending their lands and territories. 

This initiative is a global effort led by Indigenous Peoples, activists, advocates, and organizations to strengthen coordination, solidarity, and actions on this critical issue at all levels with the goal to improve the situation of Indigenous Peoples. The aim of this Initiative is to prevent, respond, reduce, and prevent acts of criminalization of, and violence against indigenous peoples. It also aims to provide better protection and access to justice for actual and potential victims not only as individuals but also as communities. 

About the position

The Documentation and Database Officer will be crucial in supporting systematic documentation and monitoring of cases of criminalization of, and human rights violations against Indigenous Peoples around the world.  S/he shall be mainly responsible in maintaining the database, regular data gathering using IPRI’s case factsheet and utilizing varying methods in gathering secondary and primary data. Indigenous applicants are preferable.

Responsibilities 

  • Coordinates with IPRI teams and partners in data collection and provides needed training, support and mentoring
  • Accurately and efficiently transfer/encode all cases received from country partners and allies to the database using IPRI’s case factsheet
  • Systematically monitor online and offline sources to obtain relevant information of cases of criminalization of, and human rights violations against Indigenous Peoples happening around the world
  • Ensures information gathered are validated and any development of existing cases are on track and updated as necessary
  • Accurately and efficiently encode all data that needs organizing and recording
  • Handles case information with confidentiality and ensures information are secured and maintains digital and actual paper trails of information entered in database as applicable
  • Develops restoration controls, assure files are properly prepared and saved to backup drives and undertakes regular data backups
  • Supports the IT Specialist in ensuring the database remains digitally safe and secure and reports any errors or irregularity in the system

Reports to: Research Coordinator

Essential skills and experience

  • High understanding of Indigenous Peoples’ rights and issues and experience in documenting human rights violations.
  • Good background, knowledge of database technologies and experience of managing data through worksheets.
  • High attention to detail and familiarity with advanced online research methods using Google search. Knowledge in using other search engines and online databases is an advantage.
  • Adhere to and meet set schedules and deadlines
  • Able to work with minimal supervision and in a multi-cultural working environment. Experience working with an international organization is an advantage
  • Proficiency in the English language. Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is highly desirable.
