An ongoing armed conflict in West Papua between the Indonesian military and the separatist movement finds ordinary Indigenous Peoples caught in the middle, resulting in deaths and violations of their rights.

Rukka Sombolinggi, Secretary-General of Aliansi Masyarakat Adat Nusantara (AMAN), gives a statement on how the COVID-19 pandemic has exasperated existing threats to land rights and heightened conflicts and criminalization of Indigenous peoples in Indonesia. Detailing resilience tactics, she shares hope which is now crucial in the fight against the new omnibus bill.

In commemoration of the International Women’s Day on March 8, the Indigenous Peoples Rights International (IPRI), together with Foro Internacional de Mujeres Indígenas (FIMI), International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA), and Land Rights Now organized the webinar, “Women at the Frontline: Indigenous Women at risk for defending their lands, rights and dignity” last March 11.

“Land is life. Indigenous women will cease to exist if their lands and territories are destroyed. We were able to protect and nurture our lands, territories and resources for many generations through self-determination, deciding on what is good for many without sacrificing the land, culture and future of our children.”
