On 9 March 2020, six members of the indigenous Dayak community were acquitted from criminal charges involving their practice of berladang, a traditional swidden farming system practiced by indigenous peoples in Indonesia. They were blamed for causing karhutla, the Indonesian term for land and forest fires. At the start of the trial, the Sintang District Court saw a peaceful protest and grand show of solidarity as hundreds of indigenous Dayak arrived in support of the six farmers. They arrived donning their customary clothes that immediately turned the Court’s façade into a sea of red tapestry.
